"Cambridge has a starring role in FameLab"

Rebecca Lloyd-Evans, currently working for BioBridge Ltd in Cambridge and Fresh Minds Ltd in London, has won a place at the finals of FameLab, the competition searching for the next science communicators. FameLab, a brainchild of the Cheltenham Science Festival, sponsored by Channel 4, Pfizer Ltd, the Daily Telegraph and NESTA, challenges young scientists to communicate the excitement of their ideas simply, directly and with maximum impact. Regional competitions lead to the finals in Cheltenham in June 2005. Rebecca, 23 years old, a recent graduate of University College London, was one of only two finalists from the London competition. She faced the ordeal of public judging by a team of 3 experts, as well as the audience, and sailed through on two topics - 3 minutes on why laughter is so good for us, making it through the first heat, then 5 minutes on the biological basis for linkage between manic-depression and creativity. She will undergo a training weekend in May and then faces her final challenge in front of another panel of judges and the Science Festival audience, along with 11 other stars of the future, including Matt Wilkinson, also from Cambridge. The winner gets £2,000, an appearance on Channel 4 and a speaking tour; runners-up will have a chance to speak at two engagements. Meredith Lloyd-Evans, Managing Director and Founder of BioBridge Ltd, a bioscience and biobusiness consultancy in Cambridge, says "If Rebecca goes on like this, I'll feel happy about retiring and handing over to her! But seriously, she is passionate about communicating science in a direct way to real people, and I'm sure she won through on this, as well as her choice of subjects. In future, she would like to work in documentary filming in this area, producing, directing and presenting."
